More HMQS Quilts (Part 4)

"One Fine Day" by Cynthia England was inspired by a photo she took on a beautiful day in Lake Tahoe while in the company of good friends.

This quilt was only identified by the small numbered slip of paper in the bottom right-hand corner, "1120-S".

Had to get some close-ups of the fairy and what looks like a baby dragon!

"Circle of Life" by Barbara Morgan; from her artist's statement, "Color wheel, Lone star in the middle with a checkerboard circle and New York Beauty segments on navy blue background."

"Cranes of a Different Color" by five quilters who call themselves the Grateful Threads. The quilt was inspired by a photo of cranes in a marsh. Each of the five ladies made one panel; for the quilting, four values of threads were used to match the color of each panel.

"Montana Grizzly" by Julie Bauer, quilted by Sue McCarty, was inspired by a vacation in northwest Montana. Julie drew, designed and paper pieced the quilt. It has 1283 pieces of fabric in it!

"I gave it to Sue McCarty to do her quilting magic and she added beautiful symbols of Montana's Crow Indians."

"Echo Cliffs" by Carol B. Johnson was inspired by a photograph taken in Arizona's Navajo Nation. Hand and machine pieced, hand appliqued, machine quilted and fabric pen enrichment.

Bamboo/cotton batting and Sulky 40 wt. thread were used in the quilting.

"Feathered Lace" by Lisa Coker is an original wholecloth design. Lisa used Irena Bluhm's technique to add the color.

"Yellow Bird" by Claudia Clark Myers, quilted by Marilyn Badger. "Trying something different with the Feathered Star, I drafted Curved LeMoyne Stars with pinwheel centers and sawblade backgrounds and added a curved Log Cabin border."

"Marilyn quilted the whimsical birds and feathers and I hand painted them when she was finished.

"High Gear...Hang On Tight" by Gail Stapanek, quilted by Ronda K. Beyer, is the second in a series; the first was gifted to a friend.

Blocks are from Karen Stone's New York Beauty pattern.

Naturally, my question is, "How do I get to be one of Gail's friends?"!

More HMQS Quilts (Part 3)

"Friendship Chain for Susan", pieced by Barbara Noriega, quilted by DeAnn Oliekan, made from a traditional pattern for Barbara's friend, Susan.

Quilted with Hobbs batting and Superior threads. Center motifs designed by DeAnn to set off the open spaces.

"Periwinkle Power" by Kathie Beltz, quilted by Mara Novak, is based on a Hunter's Star pattern....

...set in a Sunshine and Shadows variation.

"Jellylisous" by Deborah Poole: "Irish Chain portion of this quilt is made from Moda's jelly roll collection. Backing and coordinating fabrics are also by Moda."

Quilter's Dream batting poly blend, Superior threads.

"The Maze of Life" by Joann Sarachman: "Adapted from the petroglyph Man in the Maze. Fabric is hand painted, silkscreened and stamped. The maze was hand appliqued to the black background which was discharged slightly."

This is Joann's first attempt at extensive beading and bobbin embroidery. She used freeform quilting motifs.

"Bethsaida Stories" by Carolyn Aichele celebrates 3000 years of history of the Bethsaida archaelogical site in the Galilee region of Israel. Three time periods are featured.

Techniques used include piecing, bargello, applique and embellishment with fibers and beads.

"Art Deco Sunflower Simplicity" by Kaye Evans, quilted by Sue McCarty. "I took the traditional sunflower block and blew it apart to create this stunning quilt, using the art deco period of history as a roadmap."

"Custom quilting completes the picture."

"Spirits Having a Human Experience" by Denise Austin, quilted by Kim Peterson.

Embellished with Swarovski crystals, llama and sheep wool for the people's hair, outline embroidery and various types of beads.

Each figure is bound to its neighbors by a silver cord...

Statements in quotations are excerpts from the information accompanying the quilts.

I have many more pictures of the quilts and collections at HMQS -- they were that good!

"Dolly's Garden"

This picture was taken at HMQS in the booth of the Utah Quilt Guild. It was made by my friend, Josephine Keasler, and here is her statement:

"When my friend Dolly passed away last year I decided that I wanted to use my quilting skills to make something to honor her. It just so happened that the Utah Quilt Guild Quilt Festival chairperson had not selected the Opportunity Quilt for 2010. So I asked her if I made the Garden Club quilt that had won more than 5 awards in the last year, or so, as the opportunity quilt would she accept it. To add more to my stress levels, she said yes.

"With everything else that I already had scheduled on my calendar I proceeded to order the pattern and jump into the project. It took 3 months to make this quilt and I am soooo glad it's finished in time to be displayed in the various shows that we will have in Utah this spring and summer.

"One of the blocks in this quilt has the name of Josephine. It's the blue flower series that is in a group of five stems and is also in a cross section block. We've named the quilt "Dolly's Garden" in honor of my friend Gloria D. Leiding. Hope you get a chance to see it. The quilt measures approximately 86X68 and all the flowers and leaves are appliqued. It will be traveling until October when the winning ticket will be pulled at Quilt Fest in Midway, UT."

All I can say is, "WOW!"

More HMQS Quilts (Part 2)

"Serengeti at Twilight" by Leona Harden is an original design featuring a Serengeti inspired medallion and constructed with all raw edge applique, no piecing.

It is densely quilted with embroidery thread on wool batting using free motion thread play on an 18" longarm.

"My Garden of Scraps", pieced by Kara Southwick and quilted by her mother, Charlene Nelson; Kara said that all of the piecing, including the border, was totally done out of her scrap collection.

Loved the thread color changes in the quilting -- goes to show you what can be done with a couple of bags of scraps!

"Quilt Diva", appliqued by my friend, Josephine Keasler, and quilted by Peggy Shadel.

From Josephine's statement that was pinned to the quilt, "The pattern is by Amy Bradley and I personalized it with fabrics and articles that reflect my tastes, thereby creating a self-portrait." I saw this on Josephine's design wall while she was making it and it just kept getting more and more wacky and fun!

"Unfolding" by Anna VanDemark: "Inspired by the shape of spring ferns, my quilt serves as a symbol of our unfolding lives and creative spirits."

This is an original design using Superior Threads, Soft Touch Fairfield, foiling and bead embroidery.

"Catching the Light" by Elaine Miller. The inspiration for this quilt was the "Dogwood Delight" pattern by Bobbie Y. Jarrett, using Elaine's collection of "Daiwabos" (remind me to look that up!) as a background.

Materials include bamboo batting and So Fine and Bottom Line threads from Superior...

Madeira's metallic gold thread was used for the quilting.

"Pieces of Dreams" by Diane Evans is an original design using Ricky Tims' technique of drawing a motif and reflecting it eight times.

The quilt is machine pieces and machine appliqued with a flat zig-zag stitch to allow the fabric color to show through the thread.

As you can see from the picture at left, there was no card attached to this quilt, so I have no maker information -- but I couldn't leave it out!

If you know who made this quilt, please send me the contact info so I can find out more about it....

"Simplicity" by Marla Monson; through a series of stops, starts and mishaps, including remaking the top after a staining incident(!!), Marla came up with this great quilt!

I sure have to admire her persistence -- it's a beauty!

"Sew Long Sally" by Cindy Seitz-Krug was the last quilt pattern taught by Cindy's friend and long-time teacher, Sally Shuppert, before Sally retired.

All of the feather's are Cindy's original designs that were specifically made to fit the open areas of the quilt.

"Lone Stars" pieced by Winnie Blair Fleming and quilted by Denise Green featured a split lone star block with half of the background pieced light and half dark.

The empty space is a wonderful place for feathers and background fillers....
