Vacation, Day 8 -- Durango CO

I get to Durango about once a year to visit family and always am eager to see the changes that have been made -- new places to shop, eat, play. I was very disappointed to go to the quilt shop and see an empty building, but that all got figured out on Day 9 of our vacation.

Dan and I met our daughter-in-law, Heather, and our granddaughters, Zoe and Vanessa, for breakfast and some shopping in town. Both girls had birthdays this summer; Zoe is 4 and Vanessa is 10. They are both very much girly-girls, loving all things pink and sparkly, so it's no problem at all to find fun things to buy for them!

It looked like Zoe and Grandpa were having a very serious discussion here....

Grandma gets her turn for a picture with the girls....

This is the Strater Hotel, one of two historic hotels in Durango; the other is the General Palmer, where I stayed when I taught at Quilt Durango a few years ago.

Here's the train station where the coal burning train runs from Durango to Silverton during the summer. We've taken it before; it's a beautiful, scenic trip.

The horse sculptures outside the station probably aren't meant to be climbed on, but kids will be kids -- Zoe's too little and needs a hand up from Grandpa...

Our grandson, Sidney, is 12; he was at football practice this morning, so didn't get to go shopping -- that probably made him happy! He was absolutely starving when we picked him up after noon, so we all trekked over to Wendy's for a filling lunch.

After lunch, Heather went back to the house to get swimsuits for the kids and then met us back at our hotel so that everybody could go swimming. Here's Zoe showing off the butterfly on her cute little suit!

After swimming for a couple of hours, it was cool enough to venture outside again. The LaPlata County fair was in full swing, so we went over there so the kids could go on rides, look at the animals and follow Grandma around while I took pictures of the quilts and other goodies in the home arts building.

Next post -- Some of the quilts displayed at the fair.....
